Our history

The story behind Felton Ranch stretches back more than a century and reflects a deep heritage in American livestock culture.

On the maternal side of the family, Matthew Felton’s great-grandfather John P. Lynn was a respected cattleman in northwest Missouri during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Lynn operated in the Hereford cattle trade around Tarkio, Missouri, working with the well-known Rankin Hereford herd at Burr Oak Ranch, located roughly two miles west of Tarkio. The Rankin & Lynn cattle operation was active during the height of the Kansas City livestock market era, when the American Royal Livestock Show in Kansas City served as one of the most important gatherings of cattle breeders in the country.

John Lynn spent decades in the cattle business and was closely connected to the Kansas City stockyards community. Over the years he managed large cattle operations, including Z Bar Ranch, and remained active in the industry into the mid-20th century. His work helped establish the family’s long-standing connection to the Hereford breed and the cattle industry of the Midwest.

Matthew Felton’s paternal family also carries a significant livestock legacy. His father, Frank Felton, became a nationally recognized breeder of polled Hereford cattle during the 1990s. The Felton breeding program produced influential genetics that spread throughout the Hereford breed, and many cattle carrying Felton bloodlines today trace back to his program.

The Felton family heritage also intersects with the world of thoroughbred horse racing. Through his father’s side of the family, Matthew is related to Ben A. Jones and Jimmy Jones, the legendary trainers of Calumet Farm, who together trained seven Kentucky Derby winners and helped guide some of the most famous racehorses in American history, including the great Citation, the 1948 Triple Crown champion.

Together, these two family traditions—Midwestern cattle breeding and elite horse training—represent generations of experience working with livestock and land.

Today, Felton Ranch continues that heritage. The ranch remains rooted in northwest Missouri, carrying forward a legacy of cattle, horsemanship, and ranch stewardship that spans more than a hundred years. The Felton Ranch RV Experience is a modern extension of that tradition, inviting guests to experience authentic ranch culture built on real family history.

Just another american ranch story.

About the owner

Matthew Felton is a Missouri rancher and cowman continuing the multi-generation legacy of the Felton family ranch near Maryville. He has been running the ranch for more than two decades, stewarding the land, cattle, and traditions that have shaped the property and his family for generations.

Matthew is the founder of the Felton Ranch RV Experience, a project built around sharing the culture and landscape of ranch life with visitors. Drawing inspiration from family history, western ranch architecture, and the rhythms of rural life, the goal is to create a place where guests can experience the authenticity of a working ranch while enjoying a distinctive hospitality destination.

The project reflects Matthew’s belief that great places are built by honoring the past, caring for the land, and creating opportunities for new generations to experience ranch life in a meaningful way.
